Our preschool day is from 9:15am-1pm Monday through Thursdays.  We want to be fully prepared for an emergency but have limited storage space available.  We currently have emergency kits for each classroom (emergency toilet, water, shelf stable food, first aid kit, etc) and each child has the earthquake kit from home (gallon bag with trash bag, note from home, juice box, snack, toy, flashlight).  We are having trouble finding recommended emergency supplies for preschools.  How much does your school keep in emergency supplies?  Do you keep the recommended 1 gallon of water per person per 3-5 days as recommended on most sites?  How much shelf stable food do you have on hand?  Etc.  Any feedback from your school or links to sites with some good information would be helpful.  Thanks!

We provide half day parent participation programs in the mornings and afternoons five days a week.  We have up to 24 children, 8 parents, and 1 teacher on site at any given time.  Our school has a store of supplies for disasters including:

    Sunflower butter
    Dried fruit
    6 cans spaghetti O's
    12 cans tuna
    24 Nutrigrain Breakfast Bars
    8 bowls mandarin oranges
64 honey and oat granola bars
    Powdered milk
    Sliced American cheese
    Saltine crackers
1 can each orange, apple, and lemonade concentrate
Two 2.5 gal containers of water
56 8 oz. bottles of water

We also store a parent-provided emergency supply bag for each child.  We suggest to families that they include spare snacks and items that may be of comfort to their child (e.g., lovey, toy, family photo) in the case that we have to shelter in place for an extended period of time.

Hello Nancy... FEMA.gov is a great place to find emergency plans. FEMA has a site called Ready.gov that has information on all emergency situations and includes games that help prepare children for emergencies.

I'm a registered trainer in Texas for child care centers. Texas has child care "Minimum Standards" that are required by the State and enforced by Child Care Licensing. One standard is "Emergency Preparedness". It's very clear what is required to stay compliant. I would hope Washington would have something similar.

Sounds like you're on the right track.Good luck.
