    Hello friends and colleagues,
It was great to get to meet so many of you during our book club discussions this summer.  I learned so much from so many people.  I'm delighted that I got to meet so many of you and am looking forward to meeting more of you.
The diversity and equity interest forum wants to continue to help all of us connect with one another for support, caring, connection and new ideas.
We're now in the process of thinking about book club events for the next year.  Since many of us have very full lives, we're thinking of doing some one time book clubs where we discuss the whole book in one meeting.  We're also contemplating doing some "article clubs" where we meet on google hangouts or GoToMetting to talk about an article we've all read.
What would you like to discuss with your NAEYC diversity and equity forum colleagues this year?
We've had quite a bit of interest in White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.
I'm also wondering if we should read Anti-Bias Curriculum for Our Children and Ourselves again.  It's been a while, and lots of people weren't able to participate in the first book club we had on the book.
What other diversity and equity related books can you think of that would make for great discussions?
In addition- we're looking for a few good articles to read.  These might make it easier for folks with very little time to read to join us for a one time discussion.
Please reply to this thread to let us know what you're interested in.

I can't think of any books to currently recommend, but I just wanted to say I'm in. Studying inequalities in the classroom to become a better educator is my thing, and have been wanting to read White Fragility. Thanks for putting this out there!

It's great to hear that you're excited about the book group Rhiannon.  I just finished White Fragility and am excited to discuss it with others.    It looks like we'll be having an article discussion of cultural appropriation sometime this fall.  We'll probably try to discuss White Fragility in January then follow up with another article discussion plus a discussion of Anti Bias Curriculum in the spring.  Watch for a schedule sometime in early September.
I look forward to meeting you at one or more of the book/article club meetings.

    Hello!
this is my first discussion board I've joined. Studying prejudice reduction/social justice is something I've become really passionate about. I'm currently reading White Fragility. I'm looking forward to discussing it should other people read it. I would also like to recommend Waking Up White by Debby Irving.

    Thanks Caitlyn,
I'll bring up that book idea with the diversity and equity interest forum leadership team when we meet this week.  I hope to have a final schedule for everyone soon.  It's so great to hear all the enthusiasm for these book clubs.  I look forward to the connection and support we can build among this group through the discussions.

    Greetings, Colleagues.
I am excited to have just come back to NAEYC after many years. I studied and worked with anti-bias curriculum during it's first wave in the 90's and have just bought the updated book, so I look forward to discussing that. I have taught in various ECE settings, some of which were not open to anti-bias work, while others were open to some parts of it. Currently I am trying to bring a balanced, all around approach to a center that is predominantly white and middle-class  (and I am not in either of those categories, so I am not always "understood or well-received.") More discussion here will help me do a better job at what I see is needed.

Book recommendation especially with Fall at the door: Through Indian Eyes (Oyate Press.)

    Hi Meg and everyone else,
So glad you are continuing with the book/article club. Group read is so helpful and delicious! I see one of your ideas is to re-read the ABE book as we did last year. I'm of course delighted, but you may want to wait until Fall of 2019 when the new revised edition  comes out.
Maybe this year, if you are doing articles - you could select one or two chapters to read as articles, and safe the whole book for next year.
However you decide - count me in!

I'm in for whatever we choose and haven't read White Fragility yet, though I've read a lot about it. I'm also looking forward to the new anti bias curriculum book.
In the meantime, here's a short read. Philadelphia high school students wrote this handbook for their teachers and it was distributed at the district orientation day. It includes a page on equality and equity.  https://www.philasd.org/teachingandlearning/wp-content/uploads/sites/148/2018/08/New-Teacher-Handbook.pdf
Heres a local news article with background on the student authors and their goals. http://www.philly.com/philly/education/philadelphia-school-district-students-handbook-new-teachers-20180816.html?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Morning%20email%2008-17-18N&utm_content=Morning%20email%2008-17-18N+CID_f51bd1f6e19aea2ff136799fc50c17c3&utm_source=email&utm_term=a%20new%20handbook%20from%20students

In our little community of Marion, IN we are (finally) coming to have some in-depth discussion about the historic trauma visited on the community, and specifically the Black community, by the lynching of two young Black men in 1930.  (You may have seen a picture of this event -- the postcard that was made and distributed of the lynching is supposed to have been the inspiration for the song "Strange Fruit".)  Anyway, I would be interested in discussions of the historic (and continuing) impact of racially-based trauma.  A friend recommended Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome but I haven't read it yet.  If there are articles that are specifically relevant to the impact on young children, I would find that helpful.
