Does anyone have any good ideas on how to handle temperature checks with the colder weather? I am not comfortable asking parents to self report and the temperature readings are not accurate when the weather is cold.

We have also noticed that temperature variations greatly affect the readings. We do all of our screening outside, but keep the thermometer inside. It was suggested to us by our hospital system to do all of the screening questions first, as those answers could give some clue about the child's health. Then we get the thermometer from inside and take the temperature last. We also rotate thermometers every 3-4 children. So far it is working well.

The only problem we have had with temperature taking is when the children are overly bundled up in an overly heated car.  We have communicated with the parents that if their child registers a temperature for those reasons, they may loop around the parking lot again in our car line (taking off hat, coat, turning heat down) and we will retake the child's temperature once.  It hasn't been very cold yet so this has only happened twice.

We have the same issue here in AZ, during the summer, specially families that live relatively close to the school and cars never cooled down. We just waited a few minutes and see if the numbers were consistent and also looked for any other symptoms.

We take temperatures at the car, during our car line. We find that wearing gloves and putting the thermometer in our pocket in-between cars helps to keep it working as best as possible in the colder weather.

We are having the same issue.  We have found the the iHealth thermometer is the most accurate, even in colder weather, than any of the other ones that we have.  If we get a really low reading at drop off, we check it again after they have been in the classroom for about 30 minutes to confirm.
