Hello, Early Childhood Science IF, Young Children and Nature IF, and early childhood educators!

Do you have questions about how to hold classes outdoors in all weather? Do you have advice and strategies to share with other early childhood educators about the best practices of being outside with a class? Our November monthly meeting will be an exciting and informative joint meeting where Sheila Williams Ridge and Anna Dutke, experts in outdoor education, will join us to discuss and answer questions about early childhood education in the outdoors. We hope that you can be part of this November Zoom Meeting, Tuesday the 17th, at 7:30pm EDT.

Sheila Williams Ridge is the Director of the Shirley G. Moore Lab School at the University of Minnesota. She is a facilitator for the NAEYC Young Children and Nature Interest Forum, a board member for the Minneapolis Nature Preschool, and a member of the Natural Start Alliance Council. She is also co-author of the book, Nature-Based Learning for Young Children: Anytime, Anywhere, on Any Budget, published by Redleaf Press and is passionate about encouraging nature-based play and the lasting developmental benefits of a relationship between children and nature.

Anna Dutke is a Nature Preschool teacher in Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools, a public school district in Minnesota. Anna is a member of the Natural Start Alliance Council and is actively involved in supporting outdoor learning in Minnesota schools and early childhood programs through MnECO, Minnesota Early Childhood Outdoors, and the "Teach Outdoors! Minnesota" project.

As someone who loves to be comfortable in nature, I'm looking for ideas on how to keep myself and children actively warm in city parks and neighborhoods where they can not range widely through a landscape. 
And, is there a best approach to help families dress children appropriately for the weather?
Looking forward to the joint interest forums meeting--Young Children and Nature, and Early Childhood Science--on November Zoom Meeting, Tuesday the 17th, at 7:30pm EDT.

Dressing appropriately with built-in flexibility is the key. Being comfortable outside in nature in colder weather in a small, urban area is the same as being comfortable in a spacious, rural area:  dress in layers. Long sleeve tops, sweaters or hoodies, warm jackets, gloves or mittens attached to jacket sleeves, warm, breathable and moisture wicking socks, waterproof or water resistant shoes, hats. Snow pants and boots when weather calls for it.  Bring a tote bag for depositing clothing layers when people warm up.  Enjoy!!

I was wondering how other educators effectively communicate the importance (necessity) of those clothing choices to families.
I'm also looking for ways to be active in urban areas where there is not much space for moving around.

This is a useful discussion of clothing for cold weather.  I would encourage programs to to be mindful that many items, especially of good quality, come with a price tag that some families may not be able to afford.  It would be great to include as many items of recommended clothing as possible, such as snow pants, moisture wicking socks, windproof layers, etc., be included in their community/classroom extra clothes bins.  The more outside fun time the better!

Yes, the November Early Childhood Science Interest Forum (ECSIF) and Young Children and Nature Interest Forum collaboration meeting was recorded. The recording can be found in the ECSIF resources section in the interest forum's section here on Hello. 

I see that you are a member so just click on the link in the "Communities" list to go the the ECSIF section and then scroll down to Resources. For anyone who is a member of NAEYC but not yet a member of any of the interest forums, go to your profile and add all those you are interested in to be able to access those sections. Lots of good resources in every NAEYC interest forum's section.

Hello, Early Childhood Science IF, Young Children and Nature IF, and early childhood educators!

Do you have questions about how to hold classes outdoors in all weather? Do you have advice and strategies to share with other early childhood educators about the best practices of being outside with a class? Our November monthly meeting will be an exciting and informative joint meeting where Sheila Williams Ridge and Anna Dutke, experts in outdoor education, will join us to discuss and answer questions about early childhood education in the outdoors. We hope that you can be part of this November Zoom Meeting, Tuesday the 17th, at 7:30pm EDT.

Sheila Williams Ridge is the Director of the Shirley G. Moore Lab School at the University of Minnesota. She is a facilitator for the NAEYC Young Children and Nature Interest Forum, a board member for the Minneapolis Nature Preschool, and a member of the Natural Start Alliance Council. She is also co-author of the book, Nature-Based Learning for Young Children: Anytime, Anywhere, on Any Budget, published by Redleaf Press and is passionate about encouraging nature-based play and the lasting developmental benefits of a relationship between children and nature.

Anna Dutke is a Nature Preschool teacher in Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools, a public school district in Minnesota. Anna is a member of the Natural Start Alliance Council and is actively involved in supporting outdoor learning in Minnesota schools and early childhood programs through MnECO, Minnesota Early Childhood Outdoors, and the "Teach Outdoors! Minnesota" project.
