I also think that Vivian Gussin Paley wrote about "aggressive play", not specifically guns, but she wrote about Superhero play.
In the preschool where my children were and where I became the Director some years later, bringing of guns to school was not allowed. We did occasionally see kids improvise them, which was not great, but I do not remember it becoming a problem. It was often integrated into playing Superhero scenarios.
