Do you have ideas to celebrate families in a new and fun way?   Muffins w/Mom and Donuts w/Dad presents a challenge for some families.

    Great topic!
We don't celebrate them as two separate events anymore because we often have children with no dad - and we don't want anyone to feel left out - nor do we want to be the one who makes not having a dad or mom a public loss for a child, possibly for the first time. So we pick a day in between Mother's and Father's Day and call it Parent's Day. We offer a breakfast of coffee, tea, pastries, fruit, in an open house type arrangement so parents can come in, have breakfast with their child and then go to work. The kids make gifts for the parents too.

Would love to hear what other schools do!

I have taught for many years.  And I come to the conclusion that we miss the point of commercial dictated holidays.  Isn't the purpose of Mothers/Fathers's day to acknowledge the love to and from the parents? Why does it have to be on a commercial holiday.  If you have a writing center with appropriate materials including some craft supplies the children can make letters/creations for their parents everyday!
And we should be talking and reading to the children how love is shared throughout the year.

That is my view of things.

We stopped celebrating all holidays a few years back but still celebrate community and cultures every day! We host a Great Grown Up Day every spring where each child brings a special grown up to share some classroom time, a project the Great Grown Up goes home with and a performance (puppet show or musician, etc.). Great Grown Ups can be moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, babysitters, cousins, etc. Children who do not bring a Great Grown up share one with a friend. This has become a very special annual tradition that families adore.
