  • 1.  Issue with Members-Only Articles and Pages

    Posted 02-09-2018 11:59 AM
    Dear NAEYC Members--

We have been experiencing a problem with member access to members-only content on NAEYC.org. We believe we understand the cause of the issue and that it should affect only a small number of users. If you experience any trouble logging into members-only areas of the site, please reach out to hello@naeyc.org and we can help you problem solve.

    We apologize for any inconvenience.

    Best,

    NAEYC Digital Team

I am disappointed that as a member, it appears I now can only access Young Children articles back through 2015 (previously I wan able to access articles further back in time, though since I can no longer do so I cannot cite the exact time limit). And it seems not all articles at that. This seems to be a change related to the new website. If so, I hope NAEYC will rethink this limited time span/limited access, as Young Children is one of the most valuable resources you provide.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We do have a free JSTOR archive for premium members. We hope to build a 2-year archive in the future pending time and resources. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Sincerely,

I also need to voice my concern regarding the online access to back issues. I am a standard member and found that I no longer can access any issues before 2015. It is not in my budget to be a premium member. I loved how I was able to search the archive and use past articles for aspects of my job. I would like for NAEYC to reconsider giving this benefit back to us.

What will happen if a journalist or researcher wants to cite an article in Young Children, but is not a <g class="gr_ gr_90 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace" id="90" data-gr-id="90">member.</g> How does NAEYC provide access?

I understand why the deep archive is at the premium level. NAEYC has to have <g class="gr_ gr_168 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="168" data-gr-id="168">somethng</g> special to entice people to join at a higher level. The cost of standard membership is low, and actually, I think the value for premium membership is more than fair for $150.

    Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your feedback. All premium members have access to the complete JSTOR archive on this page:
    https://www.naeyc.org/resources/pubs/yc/archive.

It's actually an increased member benefit over what we had before because it's fully a searchable, full-text archive from 1956-2015 (the last two years of YC are never in JSTOR).  As a side note, the JSTOR archive currently requires you to create a free my JSTOR account to read the journal and access is a little limited but our members are supposed to have full access without doing so; the JSTOR team is aware of this problem and we hope to have it fixed either later this week or early next.

We have been exploring various options for increasing the content in the online archive for standard members and will have news on that front relatively soon.

    best,

I am a retired professor. I now have a standard membership. All memberships that I have in other organizations provide me with access to archived journal issues for less than NAEYC's premium membership. I guess that I have access because my membership was renewed before the first of the year. I think this change to block access is unfortunate and not well-thought-out. If you are a member of other organizations, including AERA, you have access to the main journal and whatever journals are part of your membership. Early childhood educators are not well paid and you are putting another obstacle in the way of their joining, and giving them a reason to give up on NAEYC.

Just my thoughts. Since the late 70's when I joined, this organization has been losing members. The last main conference had many fewer attendees than in earlier years. I hope there has been discussion about this. Price of the conference? Membership cost?

Don't block the archive to members who are receiving Young Children as part of their membership. And if it has already happened, I think the leaders and Board should rethink this policy.

I had the same thought as Nanette. If I was just a  <40 year old family child care provider, I would barely have the funds to be a member of NAEYC, much less at the premium rate. Since I am a professional development trainer and a graduate student as well, I elected to join at the higher rate to support NAEYC, receive the complimentary NAEYC books, get the print subscription to both magazines, and have access to more online courses. I already have access to the archives and a lot more research through my graduate program. I feel that having access to the digital archive should be a standard subscription benefit - I would still join at the premium level for the reasons I mentioned above. The archive was not my deciding factor.

NAEYC's mission statement is to promote high-quality early learning for all children by connecting practice, policy, and research. You state you support all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children. HOWEVER, you aren't includng your own research to be readily accessible for your standard members, who are those people who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children. You are failing your mission to connect practice, policy, and research when you limit the ability of your standard members to be able to access those connections in your Young Children publication.

It is hard enough to get access to professional journals and research. Don't perpetuate that. Instead, fulfill your mission.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the past articles from
Young Children and Teaching Young Children and letting us know how much you value them. We are listening to your feedback and working on improving members' experience accessing content. We've heard from some members that the archive of past articles for YC and TYC on the redesigned website can be hard to find. While we work on making them easier to find and adding more TYC articles to the archive, here are direct links to the past articles on the website:

    Past issues of TYC

    Past issues of YC

In the past we could only offer 2-4 articles from each issue in the archive. On the new website we are able to share the entire current issue of both Young Children and Teaching Young Children for all logged in members regardless of membership level. As we continue to add issues this way, a more extensive archive will become available to members.

    TYC:

February March 2018 TYC entire issue for all members

December/January 2018 TYC entire issue for all members

    YC:

November 2017 YC entire issue for all members

September 2017 YC entire issue for all members

Fully searchable, archive of Young Children going back to 1956

Thanks for letting us know how much you value access to the the past issues of Young Children. An extensive archive of Young Children is available on JSTOR and we are happy to let you know that we have opened access to standard members as well as premium members. You will need to login to the naeyc.org website to access this extensive  archive.
